Cheryl Wee No Nudity Allowed: Beauty queen-turned-recording artiste Cheryl Wee can smoke and swear in the name of art, but on-screen nudity is completely out of the question.
This is the one condition laid down by her mother, Jean Yip, founder of homegrown hair and beauty empire Jean Yip Group.
"I am not very old-fashioned, but stripping for fame is not allowed," said Yip, who admitted that she was not happy seeing her daughter in a bikini when Wee took part in beauty pageants, the 2009 Miss Singapore Universe and the 2012 Miss Chinese International Pageant. Still, she gave Wee the go-ahead, knowing that the bikini segment was a regular feature of most beauty pageants.
She will also not approve her daughter fronting a lingerie ad, even though other well-respected Chinese actresses including Tavia Yeung, Lin Chi Ling and Cheryl Yang have done so.
Once a typical Singaporean mother who wanted her daughter to focus on studies above all else, Yip has since become the biggest supporter of her daughter's music ambitions. Not only is Jean Yip Group the publisher of Wee's debut album, Yip is also in the process of taking her business to China, so that it is easier for her to visit her daughter, who may be based in Taiwan, Hong Kong or China in future.
