Malcolm Sng Wei Ren Dead

Malcolm Sng Wei Ren Injured & Died: Doctors Channel NewsAsia spoke with say those who intend to participate in endurance events should go for a medical check-up before embarking on such activities.

First-year Singapore Management University (SMU) student Malcolm Sng Wei Ren had taken part in a half-marathon run (21.1km) on Sunday.

The 22-year-old collapsed at the finish line at Padang at about 8.30am.

He was attended to by paramedics and sent to Singapore General Hospital where he died an hour later.

A friend said Malcolm had enrolled in SMU's Business School in August after completing his army duties.

It is known that he had prepared for the marathon.

The Singapore Sports Council is helping the police with investigations.

This is the sixth death related to endurance sports in the past seven years since such sports became popular in Singapore.

Dr Jason Chia, who is a sports physician at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said: "All things considered, running a marathon is really, really quite strenuous. If you don't have adequate training, it presents a lot of stress to your system.
