Caribbean Airlines Plane Crash

Caribbean Airlines Plane Crash: A Caribbean Airlines jet carrying 163 people crashed and broke in two as it tried to land in Guyana on Saturday, injuring several passengers but killing nobody, according to the Reuters. According to the sources, the aircraft literally ran out of the runway and crashed through the perimeter fence before falling to the roadway beyond the fence.

The plane apparently overshot the runway at Cheddi Jagan International Airport during wet weather. About 100 people received medical attention, with four hospitalized for serious injuries, said Devant Maharaj, transportation minister in

Trinidad, where Caribbean Airlines is based. The crash of the BW 523 is the worst in recent history in Guyana. Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo said at the airport, “We are very, very thankful and grateful that there are no deaths.” Health Minister Leslie Ramsammy told the French news agency AFP one person had suffered a broken leg and several others sustained minor bruises.
