World First Hybrid Shark Found in Australia: SYDNEY - Scientists said on Tuesday that they had discovered the world’s first hybrid sharks in Australian waters, a potential sign the predators were adapting to cope with climate change.

The mating of the local Australian black-tip shark with its global counterpart, the common black-tip, was an unprecedented discovery with implications for the entire shark world, said lead researcher Jess Morgan.

“It’s very surprising because no one’s ever seen shark hybrids before, this is not a common occurrence by any stretch of the imagination,” Morgan, from the University of Queensland, told AFP.

“This is evolution in action.”

Colin Simpfendorfer, a partner in Morgan’s research from James Cook University, said initial studies suggested the hybrid species was relatively robust, with a number of generations discovered across 57 specimens.

The find was made during cataloguing work off Australia’s east coast when Morgan said genetic testing showed certain sharks to be one species when physically they looked to be another.

The Australian black-tip is slightly smaller than its common cousin and can only live in tropical waters, but its hybrid offspring have been found 2,000 kilometres down the coast, in cooler seas.

This is due to the heat that’s building up round the earth’s surface. Evaporation intensifies drought more in the spring and fall. Planetary warming has upped the level of drought. A major drought in the USA lasted from 1999-2002. There were only 2 other droughts in the last 40 years that were so far-ranging and disastrous.

Crops suffered damage or wouldn’t grow at all, so shortening the food supply. there were more frequent droughts in the West recently. The last thirty years particularly have seen many droughts. These droughts have spawned wildfires that set new records in 2006 for number of fires and of acres burned. Further evidence of global temperature rises is seen in these damaging wildfires.

The eastern zones of the United States and Canada will see either only the initial penumbral stages before moonset or miss all of it. The central areas of the continent will see the moon setting as it becomes progressively immersed in the Earth’s umbral shadow. The moon will totally come under the southern part of the Earth’s shadow at 6:06 a.m. PT and emerge after 51 minutes.

NASA Announced the Discovery of Kepler-22b

NASA Announced the Discovery of Kepler-22b: New Planet With Earth-Like Characteristics Discovered, the first planet the Kepler spacecraft is discovered in the habitable zone, a zone with a distance of a star where the temperatures allow the existence of liquid water Monday.

The discovery of Kepler-22b, which year 600 light years from Earth, brings scientists a step closer to finding a planet that possibly life can host.

“This is an important milestone on the road to find the Earth twin,” Douglas Hudgins, scientific of the Kepler program said in a statement. “Kepler results continue to demonstrate the importance of the missions of the science of NASA, which aims to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe.”

Kepler-22b has several characteristics similar to the Earth: the temperature is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit and the RADIUS is 2.4 times Earth. The planet revolves around the star, which similar to our Sun, each 290 days, only 75 shy of an Earth year is complete.

Last week, the national optical Astronomy Observatory announced the discovery of Kepler-21b, a planet with a radius of 1.6 times Earth. But unlike Kepler-21b, that only 3.7 million miles from the Sun and it is therefore a torrid degrees Fahrenheit 2,960, Kepler-22b is about 79 million km of the Sun, a pleasant 72 degrees.

Williams Syndrome

Williams Syndrome Rare Genetic Condition, Williams Syndrome ,11-year-old Alex has Williams Syndrome: Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition, found in one in about 7500 newborns. These kids are hyper- social, with personalities you hardly see outside the world of this syndrome. They demonstrate extreme empathy and show warmth and openness even to strangers.

Children with Williams Syndrome tend to have slightly different facial characteristics from normal children. They have small pointed teeth, an upturned nose and slight puffiness under their eyes, but no matter what they look like their easy nature compels you to be friends with them.

Generally, after children reach 4 to 5 years of age, they display positive attitude towards people of their own race. However children suffering from Williams Syndrome show no racial bias what so ever, according to a latest research. While conducting the research, two pictures were shown to the sample comprising of normal childern as well as those who had Williams Syndrome. One picture was of a white man and the other showed an African American. When asked which one is the bad guy, kids with Williams Syndrome seemed to be indifferent. However when the same question was asked to normal children, they pointed to the picture that showed a person having different ethnicity then their own.
With such empathy comes lack of fear. These children are not aware of somebody’s ill intensions to harm them, neither are they scared of dangerous situations or objects. If they are given a spider, they’ll most likely pet it, rather than being scared. Such extreme innocence can have real life consequences, and for the same reason, such people are always in need of protection, since they are incapable of detecting danger or defending themselves on their own.

Studies show that the Syndrome is caused by the absence of around 25 genes on chromosome 7, and it can have extreme effect on physical, behavioral or cognitive composition of a person. This deletion of chromosomes takes place during the production of a sperm or egg cell. However, the reason as to why the absences of these genes result in hyper social behavior remains a mystery.

Melaleuca

Melaleuca Threat: Invasive, exotic, water-sucking trees like the melaleuca have long threatened the Everglades as they swallowed up precious marshes, mangrove forests, and tree islands.

But the U.S. Agricultural Research Service thinks it now has a solution let loose the beetles.
Their idea is to let mass swarms of hungry “bio-control agents” like the melaleuca snout beetle gobble up the leaves of the invasive plants, according to the Miami Herald. The federal scientists will rear tens of thousands of the snout beetles and other useful insects over the next few years.

The lab has already released dozens of other bugs, including a moth with an insatiable appetite for the invasive climbing fern. Unfortunately, that bug had trouble surviving the cold.The scientists have higher hopes for the snout beetle and its ability to gobble up the leaves of the disastrous melaleuca trees.
