Eating less can Boost your Brain and help you remember more

Eating less can Boost your Brain and help you remember more: Baby I know it's too fast.... Epic iPhone WinEating less could help you remember more, researchers have found. Skipping dessert and having an after-dinner coffee instead could also be good for your brain, as well as your waistline.

The news comes from an Italian study into ‘calorific restriction’ – the idea that near-starvation rations boost health and extend life.

Scientists have long known of the phenomenon, but have struggled to work out just what it is about severely cutting calories that improves health.

Researcher Giovambattista Pani decided to focus on a protein called CREB1 that is known to be important to memory and learning. In experiments on mice, he showed that cutting calories boosted learning if the animals could still make CREB1.

He also showed that cutting calories boosts the amount of the protein made in the brain.
The animals’ calorie count was only cut by 25 to 30 per cent. In human terms, this equates to about 600 calories a day.

A cup of tea or coffee may also be beneficial, with studies crediting caffeine with upping the amount of CREB1 made in the body.

The work by Dr Pani, of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome is detailed in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Pani said: ‘It is just 25 to 30 per cent fewer calories. It is like not eating a cake at the end of the meal. ‘This gives us a tool to better investigate this brain circuitry and try to figure out more drugs that do the same.

‘We are trying a couple of compounds right now on animals but it is at a very preliminary stage.’
Keeping the brain young could be of huge value in an ageing population.

Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia affect more than 800,000 Britons, and the number expected to double in a generation. Dr Pani said: ‘Our findings identify for the first time an important mediator of the effects of diet on the brain.

‘This discovery has important implications to develop future therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the ageing process. ‘Our hope is to find a way to activate CREB1, for example through new drugs, so to keep the brain young without the need of a strict diet.’

Tung Lok Seafood

Tung Lok Seafood: We had a lunch treat there while catching up with our 2 aunties and their families. I was quite hungry at 11.30am but after trying a bit of everything (lean pork century egg congee, veggies, char Siew pastry, xo sauce carrot cake, salmon sashimi, dim sum, etc)

I felt quite full and had to restrain myself to save some stomach space for dessert.

CoCo Ichibanya Singapore

CoCo Ichibanya Singapore:The branch in Silvercord Center TST is always full. As this one was opened in Kwun Tong, I finally gotta try this one. Curry rice ranged from HK$60-90 with an extra of $15-25 for 2-4 side orders from salad, soup, dessert and a drink (i.e. $20 for 3 side orders for a salad, dessert plus a drink, or $25 for 4 side orders).

The curry is very aromatic and quite spicy even though I asked for a degree 1 hot (highest 6). The rice is pretty nice too and quite a big portion.

Hair Loss in Men and Women

Medicinenet.com: Hair Loss in Men and Women: What are causes of hair loss?
There are many causes of scalp hair loss, and they do differ in men and women. This article will cover the common ones. Studies show that losing up to 100-150 hairs per day is normal. Human hair naturally grows in three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the active or growing phase. Catagen is a fairly short phase of the natural hair cycle during which hairs begin to break down. Telogen is the resting phase. The hairs that are shed daily are often in the resting or late phase in the hair cycle. Normally, about 10% of the scalp hairs are in the resting or telogen phase at any time. These hairs are not growing and are getting prepared for cyclic shedding.

In general, most hair loss is not associated with systemic or internal disease, nor is poor diet a frequent factor. Frequently, hair may simply thin as a result of predetermined genetic factors, family history, and the overall aging process. Many men and women may notice a mild and often normal physiologic thinning of hair starting in their thirties and forties. Other times, normal life variations including temporary severe stress, nutritional changes, and hormonal changes like those in pregnancy, puberty, and menopause may cause a reversible hair loss.

Notably, several health conditions, including thyroid disease and iron deficiency anemia, can cause hair loss. While thyroid blood tests and other lab tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), on people who have ordinary hair loss are usually normal, it is important to exclude underlying causes in sudden or severe hair loss. If you are concerned about some other underlying health issues, you may start by seeing your family physician, internist, or gynecologist for basic health screening. Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in problems of skin, hair, and nails and may provide more advanced diagnosis and treatment of hair thinning and loss. Sometimes a scalp biopsy may be taken to help in diagnosis of severe or unexplained hair loss.

Although many medications list "hair loss" among their potential side effects, drugs are also not overall common causes of thinning or lost hair. On the other hand, with cancer treatments and immune suppression medications including chemotherapy, hair loss is a very common side effect. Complete hair loss often occurs after a course of major chemotherapy for cancer. Usually, hair regrows after six to 12 months. by Medicinenet

Ribollita

Ribollita: Ribollita Recipe: The recipe is for two big appetites if you serve this thick soup as a main course.
In a large pot, sauté a sweet (red) onion in olive oil and add two cloves of garlic. Add 2 cups of cooked canned chickpeas, cover with the same amount of water and simmer for at least ten minutes.

Remove half of the chickpeas and purée what is left in the pot. Once this is done, put back the chickpeas and add two cubed middle-sized tomatoes and two handfuls of frozen or fresh spinach, cover the pot and simmer until the tomatoes seem cooked. I’d say at least 15 to 20 minutes. Season to taste.

Add two cups of stale bread and simmer again until the bread has almost “melted” into the soup.

Add some oregano, red pepper flakes and drizzle with olive oil.

An impromptu freezer cleaning inspired this huge pot of ribollita. It's a thick Tuscan stew - dark greens, lots of beans, vegetables, olive oil, thickened with day-old bread.

Cook A Pot of Curry: The organizers of the 'Cook A Pot of Curry' drive are going ahead with their call to get Singaporeans to celebrate the dish with their family and friends on Sunday.

The movement began last Thursday, after a group of seven Singaporean friends read the article in Today.

They decided to put out a call on Facebook 'to celebrate curries as part of our way of life and to share this celebration with those who are new to our shores'.

Their post went viral. Several bloggers spread the word about the event, which has inspired a curry song video, curry slogans, and pledges from people in places as far flung as Australia, Israel, Britain, Finland and Ukraine that they will be joining in too.

Furosemide Banned

Furosemide Banned: The American Graded Stakes Committee has approved a measure to require that the diuretic furosemide be banned in 2-year-old stakes in 2012 for the races to remain eligible for the grades it assigns, the committee said on Wednesday, upping the ante in a struggle that is pitting many owners and breeders against trainers on the issue of the race day use of drugs.

In a statement, the chairman of the committee, which is administered by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, said that TOBA would begin to work with the six states where racetracks conducted 2-year-old graded stakes in an effort to rollback the rules that currently allow all horses to be treated with furosemide on race day. Furosemide, which is commonly known as Lasix, is used to treat bleeding in the lungs.

"We view this as a positive step for the elite-level horses that will race in graded stakes, the ones most likely to perpetuate the breed," said the chairman, Dr. J. David Richardson. The six states are New York, California, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, and New Jersey. The vast majority of the stakes are held in New York, California, and Kentucky, where regulators have already said that they are re-assessing the state's race day medication policy.

Perfect Diet to Prevent Hair Loss

Perfect Diet to Prevent Hair Loss: If your receeding hairline and bald spot are giving you sleepless nights, here are a few dietary modifications to help keep your mane and its sheen Men are as touchy about hair as women are about their backsides. It's a sensitive subject, one that raises many concerns and results in paranoid treatments and extreme measures. However, until the problem begins, there is little thought put into nourishing hair other than the lather and rinse routine. Before you start losing sleep over hair loss and book appointments with trichologists, take a closer look at what you're eating. Chances are that even slight modifications made to what you eat by incorporating ingredients that aid hair growth and health will have a drastic impact. While genes and lifestyle will always have the upper hand, here's what you could eat to help curb that receding hairline.

Carrots
It's not just the eyes, Vitamin A-rich carrots provide excellent nourishment for the scalp. A healthy scalp ensures shiny, well-conditioned hair that is strengthened and moisturised. An overall balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like the Indian salmon and low-fat dairy are great boosters for healthy hair.

Prunes
If your hair suffers from dryness, thinning, stiffness, discolouration or hair fall, depleting reserves of iron might be the culprit. Prunes are known to be great sources of iron and greatly help improve the quality of hair. Also ensure you get plenty of green vegetables and beetroots in your diet in addition to prunes.

Green peas
Although green peas are not rich in antioxidants or any specific vitamin or mineral, they contain a well-balanced amount of vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and B group vitamins. These are essential for maintaining healthy hair.

Oats
Not only are oats loaded with fiber that helps maintain a healthy heart and bowels, they also contain a high concentration of other essential nutrients such as zinc, iron and omega-6 fatty acids. Together, these are also knows as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Omega-6 fatty acids in particular are essential to maintain normal skin, hair growth and development. Since this essential ingredient is only obtained through the diet, make sure your breakfast includes a bowl of oatmeal every few days in the week.

Shrimp

While red meats are best avoided in excess, finding an appropriate substitute for proteins might be a little difficult for those looking to build muscle etc. Alternatively, of the wide variety of sea food available, shrimps are a great substitute. They not only go excellently well in a number of curries and pastas, their potent concentration of Vitamin B12, iron, zinc contain all the necessary nourishment to prevent hair loss.

Walnuts
Not to be outdone by the oats, walnuts are one of the most hairfriendly nuts in the category. Not only do walnuts have more omega-6 fatty acids than any other food, but they're also full of zinc, iron, B vitamins (B1, B6 and B9), and plenty of protein. However, a word of caution, walnuts also contain a small trace of selenium, a mineral known to cause hair loss in people who are selenium-deficient or have way too much in their system. So a handful of nuts over the week should tide you over without much trouble.

Eggs
For a head full of healthy hair, the egg is probably one of your best friends. It's loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids in large amounts. Being deficient in any of these vitamins and minerals is known to result in poor quality of hair. In addition it's also a good source for biotin (Vitamin B7) which is a great aid to fight hair loss.

Low fat dairy products
Low-fat dairy products like skim milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium, an important mineral for hair growth. They also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources. Add a cup of yogurt or cottage cheese to your snack list and to help prevent hair loss, stir in a few tablespoons of flaxseed or walnuts for your required dose of omega 3 fatty acids and zinc.

Hairy mistakes
Here are a few common mistakes that severely damage hair
- Excessive stress and some medication are conclusively known to retard hair growth and promote hair loss.

- Cut down on the use of hair spray, hair gels, and styling creams that contain harsh chemical ingredients, which can dry out the scalp and cause the formation of flakes. Also harsh treatments such as perms, colours, relaxers etc take a toll on the health of your hair.

- Avoid changing your shampoo and conditioner constantly. Stick to one good mild cleansing shampoo for six months before changing.

- Excessive exposure to the sun, pollution, rain water and dust without proper protection makes the hair dry, brittle and limp. Use a live in conditioner during the rains to protect it from the humidity and wash and oil it regularly to maintain a healthy scalp. By Times of India

Graves Disease Symptoms

Graves Disease Symptoms: What is Graves' Disease? Graves Disease is a disease that does not neatly fit into any one particular category.  It is an autoimmune disorder, and an autoimmune disorder is one that causes the body’s immune system to attack itself.  If a person has Graves Disease, its antibodies (white blood cells) don’t recognize its own cells.  In other words, the immune system sees normal, healthy cells as “enemies.”  Graves Disease is the most frequent reason that young children and teenagers have hyperthyroidism.  A person with Graves Disease typically has a thyroid that is overly active, and the symptoms of the disease are dependent upon whether the hyperthyroidism that has been created is mild or aggressive/severe.

About Graves Disease
Graves Disease is one of those diseases with so many different symptoms that it may often for people who suffer from it to recognize that they have it.  They may think that they have an irregular heartbeat, night sweats, hyperthyroidism or a lot of fatigue for reasons they cannot understand.  The underlying issue could be Graves Disease, which frequently goes undiagnosed because each of the symptoms it causes can actually be seen as single health events.  For more information about Graves Disease, ask your local health provider.

Scarlet Fever

Scarlet Fever: That's what Thomas Tsang, controller of Hong Kong Centre for health protection, said the outbreak of scarlet fever epidemic struck the region - killed a second child in Hong Kong - believed to be caused by a mutant strain of scarlet fever, which is resistant to antibiotics .

Certain features of the new strain likely to be infected, said Yuen Kwok-Yung, a professor of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong. He said the new strain resistant to antibiotics 60 percent, while 10-30 percent of the previous lines, he said. The 5-year-old boy who died of scarlet fever on Tuesday confirmed Wednesday. The 7-year-old girl who died in May was the first patient die of the disease in Hong Kong for at least a decade.

Hong Kong had 466 cases of scarlet fever reported so far this year, nearly double the full year. And the epidemic has spread to neighboring regions. Nearly 9,000 cases were reported in mainland China have doubled in recent averages, the Hong Kong Standard newspaper, citing health officials. Near Macau 49 cases, a jump of 16 in 2010, the Macao Daily Times.

Arnold's Chicken Singapore

Arnold's Chicken Singapore: Arnold's Fried Chicken City Plaza #02-99/101 810 Geylang Road Singapore,Arnold's Fried Chicken.Home. Arnold's Story: Strongly recommended by some listeners on a popular radio show recently as having the best fried chicken in Singapore, I decided to try Arnold's soon after hearing about it.

I've been reading several blog posts about Arnold's Chicken. Well-known Singaporean bloggers attest that Arnold's Chicken serves the best fried chicken in the country that is why I've been meaning to try it since January. The nearest branch to my place is at City Plaza Geylang Road so we went there after our church service today.

In terms of freshness and crispiness, Arnold's chicken certainly has the advantage over other fried chicken. But when it comes to flavour and value for money, I still prefer KFC over Arnold's. Come and try for yourself if you haven't.

Aneurysm

Aneurysm: SCIENTISTS have discovered that a new device that treats potentially fatal brain aneurysms could help prevent them coming back. The Edinburgh University researchers have found that treating the aneurysms with specially coated platinum coils can reduce their recurrence.

Each year, around 5000 people in the UK suffer a burst brain aneurysm - a blister on the wall of an artery that can cause life-threatening haemorrhages. The team studied the effect of coated coils in 500 patients from the UK, Europe, Australia, South America and the USA.

The findings showed that this new form of coil significantly reduced the recurrence of aneurysms after 18 months from 33 per cent to 24 per cent. Dr Phil White, consultant neuroradiologist and honorary reader at Edinburgh University, said: "Our study shows that the non-invasive techniques for treating brain aneurysms are getting better.

"Hydrogel coated coils offer an improved treatment for ruptured aneurysms and coiling has a faster recovery than having to have brain surgery and comes with less risk as well, which is great news."

Green Tea

Green Tea Green Tea Truth: A recent study published in the journal Immunology Letters indicated a specific way in which a compound found in green tea provides health benefits, including protection against autoimmune diseases like cancer, juvenile diabetes and Lou Gehrig's disease.

The researchers explained that there are many different types of specialized cells that play a role in immunity. In people who have autoimmune disorders, some cells begin to attack others that are essential for good health, leaving harmful cells to replicate and distribute themselves throughout an individual's body. However, regulatory T cells help prevent this from occurring and maintain a balance of the different cell varieties.

The study's results showed that the polyphenol EGCG found in green tea stimulates a higher production of regulatory T cells, thereby reducing the risk of autoimmune disorders.
The investigators noted that while there are drugs designed to provide this function, there have been concerns about the toxicity of these medications.

"This appears to be a natural, plant-derived compound that can affect the number of regulatory T cells, and in the process improve immune function," said lead researcher Emily
