Joplin Missouri Tornado

Joplin, Missouri Tornado Video: 'The Trees Are Debarked' Death, Destruction Hit Joplin, Missouri: Each year, my eighth graders at Joplin East Middle School look forward to their first official visit to Joplin High School.

They have heard the horror stories about the school, how they, as freshmen the next year, will need to stay clear of the seniors who have worked their way up to the top of the food chain.

They speak in hushed whispers of Eagle Alley, a near mythical hallway that one almost needs a guide to navigate.

That first trip, which was scheduled for Wednesday, will never happen.

Eagle Alley is a thing of the past. After the devastating killer tornado that ripped through the heart of my city Sunday night, Joplin High School, the place where so many of my former students have learned the skills they need to succeed in life, the place where they made friends, created memories, and prepared for their passage into adulthood exists only in memory.

At least 89 people are reported dead and hundreds injured as a result of the first major tornado to hit Joplin in four decades.

Those of us who were fortunate enough not to be in the path of the storm (it hit approximately a quarter of a mile from the apartment complex where I live) waited in the center of a darkened city, praying that loved ones had somehow managed to remain safe in what reporters were describing as a scene from a war zone.

With nearly all power gone in this city of 50,000, the night sky was still illuminated by jagged streaks of lightning in the distance and by the lights from emergency vehicles as they passed every few seconds.

When morning arrived, we were greeted by a sun that seemed almost foreign in light of what had happened.

And now the waiting begins. Every few moments I scan through Facebook postings, heartened by messages that indicate my students and former students are alive. So far, none have been listed among the casualties through word of mouth, but it may be only a matter of time. Officials have yet to release any of the names of those who were killed.

The Joplin School District has canceled classes for today and they may well be finished for the school year, which had another nine days to go. Three of our school buildings are gone forever and the middle school where I teach no longer has a roof.

Many of my former students received their high school diplomas Sunday afternoon during graduation ceremonies at Missouri Southern State University, commemorating their achievements over the past four years at Joplin High School. Now that ceremony, which should have been a memorable milestone in their young lives, will always be tainted by tragedy.

As I write these words, slightly more than 14 hours have passed since the city of Joplin was changed forever.

The welcoming sunshine of just an hour ago has vanished, replaced by darkening clouds and the steady, insistent rumbling of thunder.
Another video from Joplin, Missouri captured the horrors from inside the storm.WATCH

Watch Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Kissing

Justin Bieber Kisses Selena Gomez At Billboard Music Awards:  It's Gettin' Serious, Y'all; Justin Bieber was among the people honored with awards at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards last night (6 awards in total) but it was a moment that occurred offstage (but on camera) that is getting all of the attention today. Bieber attended the awards show with his girlfriend Selena Gomez and when his name was announced as an award winner, he planted a big ol’ closed-mouth KISS on Selena on national television! You could hear all of the hearts of Bieber fans around the world breaking into a million pieces at that exact moment. Ah, young love.
Justin Bieber had an amazing night at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards that included six awards –and a kiss from Selena Gomez. The 17-year-old singing sensation took home a slew of awards at the Las Vegas awards show, including Digital Artist of the Year, Top New Artist and the Fan Favorite award and before be took to the stage to accept his New Artist award, he planted a kiss on Selena who he was sitting with him in the audience. On stage, he didn’t thank Selena specifically, but gave shout outs to “my whole family, [talent manager] Scooter Braun, Usher – basically everyone who helped me get out of my hometown and live my dream.” Access Hollywood caught up with Biebs backstage after his big win, where he talked about his big night. “I’m having a great time, everything’s been great, really excited,” he told Access. “It’s a dream come true.” While he was taken aback by his own accolades, the young Canadian star told Access that Britney Spears’ performance earlier in the night with Rihanna left him in awe. “She killed, she rocked it, always,” he said. “I used to have a big – I still do have a big crush on Britney… I didn’t get the chance to tell her [about my crush] but, she knows… love you Britney!” Despite his affection for Britney, in the pressroom, Justin gushed about Selena when asked about the congratulatory kiss. “She’s amazing,” he said of Selena.

Panettiere’s statement explained, "While we decided to split, we feel great sympathy and respect for each other and will surely stay close friends."
Klitschko added, "We had a great time together. But more and more we realized how difficult it is to maintain a relationship when living on two continents... I cherish Hayden as a person and woman. I'm sure we will stay friends."

Yuki Abe

Japan internationals Keisuke Honda and Yuki Abe are lined up as the first new signings of Manchester City's ambitions to win the Premier League title and take on Europe's elite in the Champions League.

Linked with all the world stars from Lionel Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, Roberto Mancini's first global assault takes place with City broadening their global reach.

Honda is rated one of the best footballers Japan has produced. The forward made an impact in the World Cup finals, alongside Yuki Abe in midfield.

Honda is currently with CSKA Moscow, while his close friend Abe has already sampled life in England and the game in this country under Sven Goran Eriksson at Leicester City.

Even though there has been absolutely zero speculation about either Japanese stars, an ESPNsoccernet insider says: "The deals are under way, and expect both players to be at Eastlands."

Blackpool Premier League Sunday

The Relegation Battle: Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan Fight To Stay in the English Premier League: The Premier League’s most thrilling race finishes this weekend. It’s not who wins the title or who is the fourth team to plunge into the Champions League treasure bath. It’s relegation, the most fundamental human drama. One point separates five teams. Three teams stay at the feast, latching to the Sky TV teat and surviving to stave off relegation next season. Two are cast out with West Ham to labor with the more modest earners. To keep things honest and heighten the drama, every match kicks off at the same time, 11:00am ET.

Here is how the table stands after 37 matches. Goal difference (1st tiebreaker) and aggregate goals (2nd tiebreaker) are in brackets.

15. Blackburn 40 [-14, 43] at Wolves
16. Wolves 40 [-19, 44] Blackburn
17. Birmingham 39 [-20, 36] at Tottenham
18. Blackpool 39 [-22, 53] at Manchester United
19. Wigan 39 [-22, 49] at Stoke
20. West Ham 33 [Relegated]

Blackburn and Wolves play each other and control their own outcomes. Whoever wins is in. They could draw and both be relegated. Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan could each win and still be relegated. I tried to work out the precise scenarios for each team. It made by brain hurt once I got past Wolves, but using ESPN’s Soccer Power Index, here are the relegation odds: Blackburn (6.8 percent), Wolves (5.7 percent), Birmingham (57.8), Blackpool (64.6 percent), Wigan (65.1 percent).

Who to root for? If you have no horses, root for Blackpool. They are a tiny team with no business in the Premier League. They went for it this season and played an attacking, positive brand of soccer. Their manager Ian Holloway is a character. How can you not love someone who asked if the league’s governors were from the Planet Zarf?

Who to root against? Blackburn. They shouldn’t be in the relegation battle. But, they got bought. Their new Indian owners know nothing about soccer. They floated fantastical notions about Brazilians coming to Lancashire. They fired steady Sam Allardyce (the best English manager) who would have kept them in the league. Their plight should have a fitting end.

Interesting Fact: From The Guardian’s Football Weekly, “Proper” Englishmen are overrated. Only one foreign manager, Avram Grant the last two seasons, has ever relegated a Premier League club. Maybe this bodes well for Roberto Martinez (worked with ESPN for WC2010) at Wigan.

Prediction: Wolves (43) beat Blackburn (40) at home to stay up. Wigan (42) beat an exhausted Stoke on the road to stay up. Blackpool (40) draws with Man U’s partial reserve team. This is where you would expect Tottenham to choke, so they beat Birmingham (39) rather comfortably. Blackburn and Blackpool are tied for points, giving Blackburn the edge on goal difference.

Iceland Volcano Eruption 2011

Iceland Volcano Eruption Closes International Airport Once Again: By AOL Travel News:

Iceland's most active volcano once again erupted on Saturday, closing the international airport that was closed for days last year upon the last eruption.

The eruption sent ash 12 miles into the air, closing the Keflavik airport at 4:30am on Sunday, MSNBC reports.
Airport operator ISAVIA said in a statement: "The ash distribution forecast over the next six hours shows that the ash from the volcano will spread over Iceland today, leading to the closure of most Icelandic airports as the day goes on."

An airport spokesperson said that the ash plume was covering Iceland but it didn't seem to be heading east to Europe, which happened last year, but was instead blowing west towards Greenland.

Trans-Atlantic flights were being diverted away from Iceland, but there is no indication that widespread disruptions would occur.

Last year's eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano shut the airspace in 34 countries over fears that ash particles could cause jet engines to stop, the Telegraph reports. It was the largest closure of airports since World War II.

BBT

BB&T (BBT), a Winston-Salem, North Carolina regional Bank BB&T (NYSE:BBT) closed Wednesday's bullish trading session at $27.07. In the past year, the stock has hit a 52-week low of $21.72 and 52-week high of $33.02. BB&T stock has been showing support around $26.84 and resistance in the $27.24 range. Technical indicators for the stock are Bearish and S&P gives BBT a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. For a hedged play on this stock, look at the Sep '11 $27.00 covered call for a net debit in the $25.66 area. That is also the break-even stock price for this trade. This covered call has a duration of 121 days, provides 5.21% downside protection and an assigned return rate of 5.22% for an annualized return rate of 15.75% (for comparison purposes only). A lower-cost hedged play for this stock would use a longer term call option in place of the covered call stock purchase. To use this strategy look at going long the BBT Jan '12 $22.50 call and selling the Sep '11 $27.00 call for a total debit of $3.79. The trade has a lifespan of 121 days and would provide 2.88% downside protection and an assigned return rate of 18.73% for an annualized return rate of 57% (for comparison purposes only). BB&T has a current annual dividend yield of 2.25%.

The Sunday Herald

Scotland Herald Puts He-Who-Cannot-Be-Named On Its Front Page,Utterly extraordinary front page of the Sunday Herald in Scotland this morning. Six little tweets in the UK have sparked a huge war over super injunctions — gag orders that British citizens can get to suppress news concerning themselves from making it into the mainstream media. The media can’t even report that a super injunction exists.

After a Twitter user alleged sexual indiscretions by a host of British celebrities that were allegedly protected by super injunctions, it set off a firestorm, forcing British lawmakers to think about whether such a thing is still feasible in the age of social media, and if it is, how to enforce it. One of the celebs, a soccer player who is alleged to have a super injunction for scoring goals with a woman who was not his wife, has filed a lawsuit to find out who the user behind the anonymous @InjunctionSuper account is. His lawyers identify him as “CTB” in the lawsuit, but it quickly emerged through social media and the American press (which is not subject to the super injunction) that the client was Manchester United player Ryan Giggs.

The latest salvo in the super injunctions battle (via Parmy Olson) comes from the Scottish Sunday Herald, which has put Giggs on its front page with a black bar over his eyes, to, um, protect his identity:
“Everyone knows that this is the footballer accused of using the courts to keep allegations of a sexual affair secret. But we weren’t supposed to tell you that…,” reads the Herald’s front page. Due to the traffic to the Scotland Herald’s website, it’s down, though the Guardian reports that the article and photo have not been published online.

Text from the Scotland Herald’s editorial via the Guardian (which still cannot name Giggs, and instead accompanies the story with a photo of Imogen Thomas, the model with whom Giggs is alleged to have offsided. The tortuous caption for the photo reads “Imogen Thomas’s alleged former lover has been unmasked by a Scottish newspaper.”):

Today we identify the footballer whose name has been linked to a court superinjunction by thousands of postings on Twitter. Why? Because we believe it is unsustainable that the law can be used to prevent newspapers from publishing information that readers can access on the internet at the click of a mouse…

Because we believe it unfair that the law can not only be used to prevent the publication of information which may be in the public interest but also to prevent any mention of such a court order.

… and because it’s going to sell tons of newspapers.

The so-called superinjunction holds no legal force in Scotland where a separate court order is needed. We should point out immediately that we are not accusing the footballer of any misdeed. Whether the allegations against him are true or not has no relevance to this debate.

Can the super injunction withstand this assault from social media and mainstream media alike? So far, it seems that Giggs’s super injunction has accomplished exactly the opposite of what he hoped for.
